Plain Brown Wrappers #3















It's time again for another mind-bending trip into the archives of my warped consciousness. This week I am featuring an artist who laughs in the face of genres or labeling, and simply kicks out the jams. While listening to the opening track on the record, I can honestly say that I have no idea how the band manages to squeeze so many wildly imaginative ideas within the course of one song. Prog, funk, jazz and psychedelic rock are only a smattering of the styles that the band innovatively incorporates into their music. The sound of this record is so crisp that the percussive elements practically jump out of the speaker, leading the listener to believe that this record must have been created within the last decade. On the other hand, this recording could have easily come from the 70's with it's progressive time signatures, blistering fuzz guitars and complex song structures that betray the idea of conventionality. I'm not going to even bother mentioning the bands that come to mind when I listen to this, because that would take away the fun of guessing.

I'm enjoying this record a lot, but have no idea of who this could be. It's got some King Crimson flavours sometimes but it's not. At the same time, I'm not a specialised expert in this music, I just keep learning thanks to your blog. Keep the good job going, pleeeeaaaase.
And come on guys, as Kevin keeps begging for comments, go for it, I don't want to wait for months before knowing who's behind this album...

Man, it starts out like Isaac Hayes & quickly turns into Frank Zappa...but the musick itself holds so many great clues. I don't want to blow it this early in the game if I'm right, Kevin, so I'll say something that should let you know if I am, then you can let me know...whatever. All I'll say now, Genius, is smoking cow.

I don't know where you get them from. An inspired choice - typically obscure. Not heard this for years - decades! Bugged the hell out of me at first but I think this is Genius Hans by Moving Gelatine Plates. Very much influenced by British prog of the time by the sound of it - more King Crimson or even Colliseum than Frank Zappa to my ears anyway. Keep up the good work. I love the blog and look forward to the next PBW offering.

You could be right. Maybe the mention of the Smoking Cow was just a distraction. Got absolutely no idea if you're right or not. I wouldn't even have remembered this band if it wasn't for the name. One of the worst (and therefore most memorable) in musical history - like it was the product of a random word generator. Come on Kev, give us the answer!

MF DOOM: Spell his name with ALL CAPS

According to sources close to the legendary rapper/producer MF DOOM, he died on 10/31/20.  His family has chosen to keep this news private until now, and the cause of death has yet to be disclosed.Below is a screenshot of the heartfelt dedication from Doom's Instagram account posted by his wife Jasmine. I am completely gutted, and am hardly able to string words together for this post. Doom's material throughout the early years as Zev Love X with KMD, to the last two decades spent with the alter egos of MF Doom, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughan and Metal Fingers has thoroughly enriched my life. Madvillainy , his unprecedented collaboration with Madlib in 2004, will go down as one of the best records in the history of hip-hop. Doom's style is difficult to pinpoint, as he was able to rap fast with a slow, booming baritone, while delivering his lines in a cadence that was like no other before him. He made what he was doing seem effortless, but he was undoubtedly giving it his all.
