Plain Brown Wrappers #9- Synapse Ticklers















Recently, I managed to give the blog a spiritual cleanse, as I deleted over fifty spam messages that had accumulated on here over the past several months. Hopefully, the rate at which I have been receiving spam will go down considerably since I now require all users to enter a code whenever they leave a comment.

Well, let's get on to the matter at hand.

This is the 9th episode of Plain Brown Wrappers, and I am proud to say that this is one of the most mind-bending platters of wax to ever be featured on Eclectic Grooves. As I listen closely to each sound that the guitarist on this record manages to squeeze out of his instrument, it is clear to me that this is either the product of a brain-fried visionary from the psychedelic era, or the whacked-out experiments of a lonely, pimply-faced music geek set loose into a musical playground filled with echo chambers, effects pedals and stompboxes.

While you are taking this musical excursion for the first time, I want you to think about what kind of mind it takes to create something of this magnitude, and then you can return your seat backs and tray tables to their full upright position as we are cleared for landing. I hope you have enjoyed flying with Eclectic Grooves. Please come again!

Hey Kevin. Nice to have you back! Let's hope you get a few more comments for this one. Another one of your willfully obscure offerings i would say except... I think I actually know who this is! Not heard the album before but I think I know the guitarist. You're spot on, the guy must be as mad as a badger. You need to take a lot of substances to produce music like this. Is this parody or is he serious? At one point i swear it could have been Hank Marvin playing there! Anyway I won't give my answer just yet - but should I be calling a spade a spade? Where do you get this stuff from BTW?

Thanks for letting me know your two cents on this one. I have to say that I am impressed that you have heard of this person, because when I first came across this music, I felt like it was released in a small private press. I don't think that it is meant to be a parody, as the music seems to be too intense and complex for that.

Anyway, you asked where I get this stuff. Most of it comes from lists that I encounter in articles from magazines such as Wire, Wax Poetics, Signal to Noise. Also, I read up on rare, out-of-print and private press releases from Rate Your Music, and download them from Soulseek.

There is absolutely no other way to get some of these albums, as they are way out-of print.

Anyway, it doesn't seem like anyone else is going to chime in with their guesses.

I'll be revealing the answer to this one in a few days.

I downloaded an album by this guy sometime last year because it sounded interesting- the self titled on where he goes in for bit of cello abuse as well. Besides that I've not encountered him before and certainly never heard this album. A bit of internet research tells me there's not much more to find anyway - so congratulations on getting this one out to us. Tak for musikken!

MF DOOM: Spell his name with ALL CAPS

According to sources close to the legendary rapper/producer MF DOOM, he died on 10/31/20.  His family has chosen to keep this news private until now, and the cause of death has yet to be disclosed.Below is a screenshot of the heartfelt dedication from Doom's Instagram account posted by his wife Jasmine. I am completely gutted, and am hardly able to string words together for this post. Doom's material throughout the early years as Zev Love X with KMD, to the last two decades spent with the alter egos of MF Doom, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughan and Metal Fingers has thoroughly enriched my life. Madvillainy , his unprecedented collaboration with Madlib in 2004, will go down as one of the best records in the history of hip-hop. Doom's style is difficult to pinpoint, as he was able to rap fast with a slow, booming baritone, while delivering his lines in a cadence that was like no other before him. He made what he was doing seem effortless, but he was undoubtedly giving it his all.
