Eclectic Mix Tape #1

Well, I'm back from vacation with many ideas for this blog. I've been listening to all kinds of music and traversing the web for the latest and greatest blogs to feature on Eclectic Grooves.

I will be updating the web links on the side of this page, as it has come to my attention that many of these blogs are defunct or have infrequent updates. In addition, I have a plethora of new sites that I have been checking out on a daily basis that I will be showcasing on here in a future post.

I wanted to inform you that the fight for internet radio is still going on. Many people voiced their concerns over the past month, and let it be known that they will not allow their civil liberties and freedoms to be violated. Because of this, Pandora will have more of a fighting chance for survival in the internet radio business. Unfortunately, the fight isn't over yet, and we need to continue contacting our local representatives and state senators to support the passing of the Net Neutrality Act. I will keep you informed as I hear further developments on this issue. Thanks for supporting internet radio!

Here is an eclectic mix that I whipped up a couple days ago. I didn't realize it while I was compiling it, but it features a lot of piano and groovin' hammond organ. This one clocks in at 72 minutes, so it will fit perfectly on a CD. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Here's the tracklist along with a short description:

1)Mickey and the Soul Generation- Why You Wanna Leave Me- A raw live recording of this Texas band from the 60's that features impassioned vocals over a bed of funky ass drums and horns

2)Alvarius B- Missing From Pasture- contemplative instrumental folk avant garde from Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls that has traces of Nick Drake and Leo Kottke

3)John Ylvisaker- The Man For Me- Fuzz guitar and organ fueled Christian psych folk that recalls the melody from "Secret Agent Man"

4)Marc Ribot- Nature Abhors a Vacuum Cleaner- Massive crescendoes of hammond organ battle against a furnace of drums for an avant garde jazz/blues that you can't take home to mama

5)Charlie Musselwhite- Christo Redemptor- mornful and melancholy blues filled with an extra heaping helping of hammond organ and harmonica

6)Apryl Fool- Tomorrow's Child- psychedelic rock with fuzz guitar and menacing organ lines from this dynamic Japanese four-piece

7)Pazant Brothers- Loose and Juicy- old-school funky soul jazz with a sound that's funkier than a three day old batch of collard greens and black eyed peas

8)Isaiah Owens- Slip In & Tip In- untamed and gritty gospel blues from this Alabama bluesman that could best be described as a cross between RL Burnside and Hasil Adkins with the vocals cranked past eleven

9)Tav Falco and the Panther Burns- Bourgeois Blues- frenzied distorto-rockabilly blues featuring an itensely dynamic slide guitar solo

10)Nick Cave- Stagger Lee- haunting and explicit version of the old blues standard that makes N.W.A.'s "Fuck Tha Police" sound tame in comparison

11)Felix Cubin- Broder Luzifer- cerebral electronic compositions that sounded light years ahead of time. If it wasn't for Felix, there would be no Squarepusher, Autechre or Four Tet.

12)Poor Righteous Teachers- Rock Dis Funky Joint- one of my favorite rap songs from the early 90's featuring an MC with one of the best lyrical flows since Rakim and Special Ed

13)Delroy Wilson- Give Love a Try- dubbed out reggae classic from the famed Studio One sessions. This is perfect music for a summer afternoon cook-out.

14)Geraldo Pino and the Heartbreakers- Power to the People- groove heavy afro-beat that is guranteed to get the booties shaking on the dance floor.

15)Eddie Harris-Freedom Jazz Dance- funky soul-jazz tune from the electrifying Eddie Harris which inspired Miles Davis to record his own interpretation of the song on "Miles Smiles".

Hello Kevin,

what great news you left on my blog. Very much looking forward to your Future Queens. Actually, I really guessed they might find a new home somewhere and sometime, and I'm delighted to see that it's over here!

Eric,

I downloaded the mix through Zshare and unzipped it with WinRAR. You can also try this utility called 7-Zip. They both work better than Winzip in my opinion. Hope this helps you.
